TECHNIQUE BY JULIE POE Here are 2 ways to achieve the Warhol look in your stamp art: I. This one is the most work involved but I like the results the best. 1. Cut several pieces of white cardstock in exact same size/shape that will accommodate the image to be stamped. a. If you have a shadow stamp that will work for the background shape, you can skip this step and later stamp directly on card front or other cs and cut out later to mount on card front. b. If you have repositionable thin correction tape, you can mark off your "grid" directly on the card front creating the spaces that will each hold your Warhol images. 2. Stamp image centered on each piece of cardstock either by: a. If using a fairly solid image stamp, you can use a different color ink for each time the image is stamped. You can use your ink pad or markers directly on rubber. Be sure to give a good huff before stamping so you get the most intensity out of the ink. b. If using an outline image stamp, stamp in black ink and you may need your positioner later to restamp image if the design needs reinforcing after it's colored in. c. If using an outline image stamp, stamp in pigment ink and emboss with colored EP. You could use all black or other colors but each stamping would need to be a different color with colored EP or clear EP/colored ink. 3. Create a mask of the image and carefully cut out. 4. Color in images, if outline stamp was used. Remember each one needs to be different and very contrasting. You could even use the mortise of the mask you cut out and sponge/daub the ink color onto the image. a. The coloring in can be done with markers, ink & blender pen, colored pencils, or pastel chalks. I like the markers best since I get the best intensity with them compared to the others. Use as solid coloring in the image and use as few colors as you can. b. After coloring in you may need to restamp image to bring out the detail of the design. You will need your stamp positioner for this. 5. Cover image with mask and fill in background completely with contrasting color ink. Do this for each image, each in it's own contrasting color to the image. I like to get in as close to the image as I can by filling in gaps with matching marker or blender pen & ink. a. If you are going to use the shadow stamp to create your background then ink it up well and huff on it before stamping to get the strongest coloring. 6. Mount each piece of cs on card front in desired manner. You may want to mount each onto another contrasting color for a border before mounting on card. Note: white border all around each image's cs is very sharp looking and great added contrast. a. If you used correction tape, remove it now. II. Here is a much faster way to achieve the Warhol look. I promise not to tell anyone you took the shortcut! 1. Stamp image each time on a different color cs in contrasting color pigment ink. a. Emboss with clear EP for extra punch if desired. 2. Cut out images as close to the outline of the image as possible. 3. Mount each image onto its own contrasting color piece of cs. a. Each piece of cs must be cut into same size/shape. 4. Mount these pieces on card front in desired layout. |
